In my research I propose a new perspective on the fundamental question of what explains the success or failure of a conflict reconciliation process. I pinpoint a gap in literature on peace and conflict, which largely focuses on how perceptions of the past influence reconciliation attempts, while ignoring perceptions of the future as a potential explanation. Moreover, it is an empirical phenomenon whereby perceptions of the future are reflected in reconciliation processes and influence them. On this basis, the research project aims to create an in-depth body of knowledge examining the critical role that 'perceptions of the future' play in reconciliation processes. As part of this, define the phenomenon, identify its impact and understand its characteristics.
